Results of long-term corrosion monitoring in Fusina power plant and corrosion/erosion laboratory tests

In the frame of DEBCO UE-Project results of two long-term corrosion monitoring campaigns at Fusina (I) ENEL power plant, that is operated in co-combustion regime of coal + RDF (5% in thermal load), are presented together with corrosion and erosion laboratory tests. Corrosion monitoring campaigns were performed by the new system developed by RSE. The first campaign was carried out in combustion chamber of Unit 4 of the power plant during a period of 3900 hours of fire, corresponding to 2900 hours of co-combustion operation, exposing four probes equipped by specimens made of 16Mo3 at 450 °C. Only the probe installed close to RDF nozzle showed a relevant corrosion rate, while other probes presented a normal or moderate consumption. The second campaign was performed in the boiler convective pass, exposing two on-line measuring probes, equipped by specimens of AISI 347H, at operating temperature of 570°C, which is currently used in this plant. Negligible corrosion attack was found after exposure of 5000 hours of fire (3500 hours of RDF co-combustion).Corrosion and erosion laboratory tests were carried out simulating the co-combustion atmosphere of Fusina power plant with specimens operated at a typical temperature (630°C) of an Ultra Super Critical (USC) steam cycle. Six materials candidates for the use in USC conditions were selected and results of tests showed that the nickel-base Alloy 625 presents the best resistance to corrosion attack, even when deposits of molten salts are present on the surface, but the worst one to erosion.
