Scale-Up of planar oxygen transport membranes to component size

In questo lavoro è descritta la procedura utilizzata per la produzione di membrane per separazione di ossigeno planari. Le membrane realizzate sono state testate in configurazione 4-end, dove la corrente ricca di ossigeno è alimentata su un lato del component, mentre l’ossigeno permeate viene raccolto alimentato un gas di sweep dall’altra parte.

In this work the procedure developed in the frame of the EU-funded project GREEN-CC to produce planar oxygen transport membrane component is described. In particular asymmetric La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3-δ (LSCF) membranes were manufactured by sequential tape casting. Two of those membranes were combined with an inner supporting architecture, fabricated by a punching process from thick porous foils, which also provides flow channels for the sweep gas. To prepare “half cells”, a green asymmetric membrane tape was combined with the punched support foil by means of lamination.

After debinding and sintering two half cells were joined, forming a membrane component with a membrane area of 140 cm2. This work clearly highlighted that the ceramic powder morphology (i.e. specific surface area, particle size) is extremely important for the production of tape casting slurries. In addition, the powder properties also influence the sintering behaviour.
