Sensitivity to spatial resolution of the source apportionment analysis over italy

Lo studio proposto verte sulla valutazione modellistica del ruolo del trasporto su strada e di altri importanti settori emissivi alle concentrazioni dei principali inquinanti atmosferici sul territorio italiano e sulla sola pianura padana.

The Po Valley area frequently suffers high concentrations of particulate matter, especially during winter times, when severe stagnant condition lead to frequent exceedances of air quality standards. Urban areas usually suffer the worst conditions, driven by the contribution of transport and heating emissions. By means of chemical transport models is possible to describe the main phenomena driving the pollution processes as well as to discriminate the role played by the different sources.This work is finalised to understand the ability of the model to describe the role of different emission sources in changing resolution.A modelling study has been performed by means of the CAMx chemical and transport model. CAMx has been implemented with the Source Apportionment Tool (PSAT) that allows to discriminate the contribution of different emission sources and areas to particulate matter concentrations. PSAT is based on a reactive tracers approach, thus allowing to take into account the influence of non linearity in the development of secondary pollution levels. The model has been applied for both January and June 2005 over two domains: a master domain that covers the Italian Peninsula, with a spatial resolution of 15 km, and a nested one that covers the Po Valley area with a grid step of 5 km. CAMx has been driven by the WRF meteorological model; emissions have been derived from the Italian official inventory and the EMEP database and arranged in a model ready form by means of the SMOKE processor. Otherwise natural emissions were calculated with a sea salt processor based on Gong and the biogenic emissions model MEGAN. Finally, the initial and boundary conditions have been obtained by a CHIMERE model run at European scale. The PSAT tool has been performed to evaluate the contribution to particulate matter concentrations of different emission sectors, such as road transport, split into passengers cars and other vehicles, and energy production. Through the use of the PSAT algorithm the main emissions sectors have been investigated in order to highlight their different role in determining particulate matter concentrations both in 15 km and 5 km of spatial resolution.
