Smartainability®

Smart cities are the paradigm of future cities, but which are smart city’s typical features? Basing on the information presented in the existing literature RSE has expressed its smart city definition: a smart city is an urban setting which effectively works to improve citizens quality of life. The smart city is able to facilitate and satisfy citizens, companies and organizations needs, by common and original use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), especially in communication, mobility, environment and energy efficiency fields.

The synergy between smartness and sustainability is essential to realize this new city paradigm and the performance quantification of these two aspects is important to define a smart city level. RSE has created a new standard assessment to evaluate smart cities smartness and sustainability: Smartainability®.

The new methodology was adopted, for the first time, on the Expo Milano 2015 site, designed as a digital smart city with an high concentration of innovative technologies.

After testing and developing the methodology with this first case, we have developed guidelines, in order to allow Smartainability evaluation to be carried out in other contest. In this way will be possible to repeat Smartainability® analysis in other bigger urban sites or whole cities.
