Superconducting fault current limiter development based on coated conductors within the project ECCOFLOW-system aspects

ECCOFLOW is a European funded project aiming at a 24 kV, 1 kA resistive-type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) which will be installed successively at two different sites and is requested to fulfil the demands of two distinct European utilities.

The limitation time of more than 400 ms puts challenging requirements on the SFCL system. A consortium of 15 partners has teamed up to develop the coated conductor based fault current limiter in several R&D steps. At the beginning the properties and behaviour of suitable and commercially available HTS materials have been investigated. With the results of this experimental work and comparison to theoretical values and simulations, the conductor performance was optimized for this FCL application. Appropriate geometries had to be worked out to ensure electrically and mechanically stable components. The design shall minimise the AC losses after a comprehensive measurements of these losses on tapes, few-tape configurations and small coils. The system including the cryogenics, control and safety elements has to fulfil the high demands on reliability, especially with regard to system integration. The status and results achieved will be presented.
