The challenge of the energy transition in the small Italian islands

Presentazione dell’esperienza di RSE a supporto del Ministero dello Sviluppo Economico nel processo di transizione verso uno sviluppo sostenibile del sistema energetico delle Isole Minori italiane non interconnesse alla rete elettrica nazionale.

In Italy, the small islands not connected to the electric national grid have started the process of transition towards more sustainable energy system models. The involved small islands are 20 inhabited islands where electricity is basically provided with diesel generators, with high generation costs and GHG emissions, and RES development is low. Tourism is the main economic activity, therefore there is a large seasonal variation of the electric load.

RSE is supporting the Ministry of Economic Development in setting up this process of change. After having analysed the current situation of the 20 islands, 5 representative case-studies have been modelled to identify possible configurations with significant RES share. Eventually possible steps and measures to be implemented in all the islands have been studied in order to promote the transition.

On February 2017 a decree has been issued by the Ministry providing special incentives for new RES plants in order to reach a 10% of RES-e share within 2020 and reduce around 5% of electricity consumption for hot water production. The decree provides also the financing of 2-3 innovative projects, which demonstrate a high reduction of the conventional electricity production (up to 50%).
