ViDEPI project data utilization for sites characterization in range of CCS, geothermal and hydrocarbons projecs in Italy

The enforcement of ViDEPI Project (visibility of petroleum exploration data in Italy) contributed to let the permits and concessions documentation via web available. The data are, in particular, final well logs, seismic lines, maps, technical reports and other on paper documents), before available only on paper at UNMIG offices of Economic Development Ministry. All raster data were digitalized, geo-referenced, interpreted if needed and, then, integrated in a GIS – Global Information System, so to facilitate cross-correlation among data, for example to detect and characterize Italian potential sites for CO2 storage, by RSE SpA. A complete and well-established analysis methodology was carried out, in order to manage, interpolate and spatially correlate all the information coming from the different mentioned kind of data. These correlations were facilitated -as said- by using a Global Information System, in which several different informative layers were overlapped and implemented (administrative data, power plant positioning, protected environments, just to give some examples). These information are of interest in order to obtain a complete overview for a accurate recognition of the site for CCS or energy storage/production. This methodology also foresees the data integration -after making them structured and coherent each other- into a software called SIAM (Integrated System for Modeling Analysis, entirely realized by RSE SpA), by which it is possible to realize 2D and 3D grids, for numerical, geological, fluid dynamics and geomechanic modeling of a specific site. Several sites have been modeled using this procedure, both onshore (Malossa, Sulcis coalfield) and offshore (Emilia Mare, Pesaro Mare, Marche offshore, Calabria Ionica offshore). This method also allowed to build the Marne a Fucoidi Formation (a particularly significant seismic marker useful in comprehension of underground structuring) map for the Zone B of Adriatic Sea.Most important, the illustrated workflow allow not only site modeling for CCS purposes, but it adapts it-self to gas storage, energy storage, geothermic modeling. Therefore, it is clear that the whole system contributes to a significant improvement of starting public data available as well as to investigate the aspects involved in underground uses management. The result of RSE work is on line available by a WebGIS publicly consultable.
