Water gas shift reaction in a PSS supported palladium membrane reactor: an experimental investigation

Si descrive alcuni risultati dell’attività svolta nel progetto 8 (Impiego sostenibile dei combustibili fossili e cattura e sequestro della CO2) sulle membrane per la separazione dell’idrogeno dal gas di sintesi.

In this work, water gas shift reaction is performed in the viewpoint of high purity hydrogen production through a composite palladium-based membrane reactor. The membrane reactor houses a supported porous stainless steel palladium membrane showing at 390 C and 0.8 bar of pressure difference across the membrane an ideal permeation selectivity H2/N2 around 300. The reaction tests are performed at the same temperature in a reaction pressure range between 7 11 bar, keeping constant the permeate pressure at 1.0 bar. As a best result of this work, a CO conversion of 80%, a hydrogen recovery of 60% with a hydrogen purity of around 95% is achieved operating at H2O:CO = 1:1, p = 11 bar and gas hourly space velocity = 5750 h-1.
