Foreword

APOLLON is the acronym for Multi-APprOach for high effciency integrated and inteLLigent CONcentrating PV
module (systems), a large integrated project carried out in the frame of the VII European Program. This report has
been compiled by the members of the APOLLON Project and it represents the culmination of 5 years of work from
2008 to 2013, bringing together the results from all the development chain of Concentrating Photovoltaic technology,
from growth technology to system characterisation and environmental impact, thus including, namely:

p the work done for the development of a new MOCVD growth chamber with a new heating system, gas injection
system and wafer susceptor design to get a better control of wafers deformation during the deposition of the
different semiconductor layers in a multi-junction solar cell and to allow new materials to be deposited with
reduced carry over effects;

p the improvement of silicon and III-V based solar cells structures to increase effciency value;

p the development of and comparison between different optics solutions: Fresnel, Hybrid lenses, Mirrors with or
without dychroic flters with different secondary optics;

p the creation of new intelligent concentrating modules (ICM) equipped with internally integrated position sensitive
detectors and maximum power point tracking devices;

p the testing of receiver and modules, including a new methodology for contributing to the current standard for
solar cell outdoor temperature measurement;

p the results of the Intercomparison spectroradiometer campaign aimed to ascertain the accuracy of DNI
measurements;

p the environmental and cost impact analyses;

p an outline of possible scenarios for the development of Concentrating Photovoltaic technology and identifcation
of research areas to be further addressed.

We hope that this report can improve understanding of the advances in Concentrating Photovoltaic technology
and their future impact.
