HVAC-to-HVDC OHL conversion: a study case in the Sicilian transmission network

This article describes the network analysis and evaluation studies regarding the potential conversion from HVAC (High Voltage Alternating Current) to HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) of a transmission line in a realistic case of the Italian power system in a scenario for 2030.

The activity, carried out as part of the collaboration between RSE and the University of Padua, was initiated with the definition and preparation of the reference electro-energy scenario for the year 2030. The electro-energy scenario selected for the Italian system by the horizon year 2030 is based on the PNIEC (National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan) / NECP (National Energy and Climate Plan). In this context, particular attention was dedicated to the electrical system of Sicily, focusing the analysis on potential network congestions by 2030, also due to the massive production of electricity from renewable energy sources, especially in the western part of the island.
