SDN implementation based on Mininet to support Synchrophasor Measurement Systems for Smart Grid Management

Synchrophasor measurement technology represents a key element for the monitoring and control of power grids..

Despite its recognized potential in supporting distributed and bidirectional Smart Grids, its use is still limited to transmission networks due to high implementation costs and the limitations of static optical communication infrastructures. This article proposes an SDN architectural model to overcome the scalability and availability issues of such architectures: PMU-PDC communicate over a mesh network through logical paths dynamically managed by an SDN controller, implementing the logic of the required application service while minimizing latency. This approach is first validated on a testbed based on virtual machines and then tested on the Fog INtelliGent Edge Reactive (FINGER) platform, replicating a real synchrophasor measurement system.
