Three dimensional simulation of the dynamics of electro active polymers using shell elements

The paper discusses a new algorithm for the simulation of electroactive polymers. The algorithm is based on shell elements.

The development of electroactive polymers is a very active branch of research with many applications mainly dedicated to biological systems. In particular, the simulation of these materials is a very important topic for predicting their behavior. This work proposes and analyzes, from a mathematical point of view, an algorithm for the simulation of active polymers arranged in possibly complex geometries. This algorithm was designed to be implemented with unstructured three-dimensional grids coupled with shell elements to account for boundary effects and boundary layers in a computationally efficient manner. In particular, it focuses on the existence of a discrete and positive solution to the algorithm. It includes a comparison between the obtained results and experimental data: the aim is to reproduce the results obtained from two classical tests in this field, i.e. electrical impedance spectroscopy and the displacement of polymers when subjected to an external electric field.
