An Innovative Sensor for Cable Joint Monitoring and Partial Discharge Localization

To improve the reliability of the network, we need to monitor its most vulnerable points. One of the weak points are cable joints, which are prone to failure and can cause large losses both technically and economically. Joint failures are generally caused by impurities added unintentionally during their installation causing partial discharges (PDs).

Over time, these discharges erode the insulation causing treeing which leads to a destructive discharge between the conductor and the earth shield. This is why we need a method for early diagnosis of defects in joint installation as well as a continuous online monitoring system. For this purpose, we adapted a previously developed sensor by improving certain features. This sensor is based on the measurement of the current induced on a conductor due to a change in charge. It was tested experimentally on a real joint in which defects were introduced artificially. The results showed that the sensor is able to detect partial discharges (PDs). We also developed a method for the localization of PDs. The first results show a consistency between the possible location of the defect, the numerical simulations and previous experience.
