Security and safety of modern complex systems

The article considers the security problem in a global way and proposes a generalization of the definitions of security, to support the definition of a general and complete security framework in the current context of systems with close dependence between physical and ICT aspects.

The use of the generalized definitions of security and safety enables the evaluation of risks for a system and for the environment in a more complete way, highlighting the dependencies (intra- and inter-dependencies) of these properties, allocated to the different subsystems, and therefore detailed analysis of the security of a complex system. The analysis can consider all types of risks, both physical and ICT, enabling security to be quantified at all levels and for all subsystems.
