Use of Historical Data for the Estimation of Distribution Network Expansion in Future Decarbonization Scenarios

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions will require renewable energy sources to represent a significant portion of the generation energy mix.

An important contribution is expected from the resources installed at the distribution network level, such as photovoltaic generators. Distribution networks will therefore play a key role in the decarbonization of the power system and will require both conventional reinforcements and innovative control solutions. These problems are not new, as in recent years some countries have already faced the problem of combining grid restructuring and advanced control strategies to install a significant share of distributed generation. The objective of this document is to show how historical data can be used to estimate the future evolution of the electricity system. The analysis is focused on the Italian distribution system, where distributed generation already represents a large percentage of the energy mix.
