A Model Based on First Principles for the Simulation of Partial Discharges

This work presents the latest developments of our simulation systems which are capable of simulating the evolution of discharges in complex three-dimensional geometries.

Partial discharges are one of the main aging mechanisms of dielectric materials, particularly when alternating currents are used. Furthermore, this problem is particularly serious when partial discharges are associated with degenerative effects such as electrical treeing. This work presents the latest developments of our simulation systems which are capable of simulating the evolution of discharges in complex three-dimensional geometries through high-performance parallel computing technologies. The code is able to predict the evolution of certain macroscopic characteristics, which can be directly measured, and estimate the evolution of the progression of internal aging. For example, the systems can simulate the creation of reactive chemical species in gases and their interaction with the internal surfaces of treeing branches. The results of a set of test cases are shown and discussed.
