Application of LCA methodology to the eco-design of the WaveSAX device for generation from wave motion

WaveSAX is an innovative Oscillating Water Column-type device for producing energy from sea waves, developed by RSE S.p.A and currently still in a prototype state. This paper illustrates the application of LCA methodology in the selection of materials of construction of the various parts of WaveSAX to promote a device design that takes into account not only economic aspects but also environmental aspects.

In particular, the paper analyzes and compares four implementation configurations that differed from each other in terms of material used (steel and fiberglass composite material) and installation method. Since devices for harnessing marine energy are considered to be a technology that will have to contribute to the growth of a low-carbon energy system, it was decided to analyze in detail the greenhouse gas emissions for the different configurations under consideration.
