Evaluation of the Uncertainties used to Perform Flow Security Assessment: A Real case Study

This paper proposes a validation framework to assess the quality of uncertainty predictions when they are used to perform power flow safety assessment on network branches.

The consistency between probabilistic forecasts and observations and the accuracy of uncertainty forecasts are verified with advanced metrics widely used in weather forecasting. The evaluation is completed by quantifying the value added in exploiting uncertainty forecasts as compared to current TSO practices using deterministic forecasts. For the power industry, this proposed validation framework provides a way to compare performance between alternative uncertainty models when used to perform safety assessment in power systems. The quality of the proposed metrics is illustrated and validated using historical data from the French transmission system.
