Accurate and Low Cost Sun Pointing Detector unit for Concentrator Photovoltaic applications

A new accurate and inexpensive Position Sensitive Detector (PSD) unit has been developed to improve the accuracy of sun tracking and characterization of CPV modules.

In addition to outstanding accuracy and linearity, the proposed solution is miniaturized to be easily integrated into most types of CPV modules and thus has wide applicability. By integrating a PSD sensor into each CPV module, intelligent sun-tracking control strategies can be adopted. This also helps to overcome misalignment problems usually arising when the PSD sensor is installed on the solar tracker frame. In addition, the PSD unit can be used for two-dimensional determination of the acceptance angle of the CPV module and allows for the direct normal radiation to be estimated. All these features also allow the PSD unit to be used for monitoring CPV power plants. In this contribution, the PSD unit is described in detail along with the performance and tests performed in RSE’s CPV test facility
