HVDC Technology in the Planning of the Pan-European Electricity System

The article describes the main advantages that HVDC technology can provide to the electricity system and focuses on its diffusion in Europe, paying particular attention to the main HVDC projects affecting the Italian grid.

High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) technology will play an increasingly central role in the development of the grid of the future compared to the past, due to technological developments, the growing use of renewable energy resources and the ambitious European objectives. These developments have introduced new challenges in power transmission planning and also impact the technology choices and geographical location of interconnection projects. This article, after an overview of the advantages that HVDC technology can provide to the electricity system, focuses on its diffusion in Europe and pays particular attention to the main HVDC projects affecting the Italian grid.
