LCA applied to agrivoltaic systems: functional unit and approach for multifunctionality management

The article provides guidelines for conducting LCA studies of agrivoltaic systems, multifunctional systems that involve the generation of electricity from photovoltaic systems and the carrying out of agricultural activities on the same site.

Agrivoltaic systems are multifunctional systems that concentrate the generation of electricity from photovoltaic systems and the carrying out of agricultural or pastoral activities on the same site. With a view to their greater diffusion, a preliminary assessment of the potential environmental impacts/benefits compared to the corresponding single-production systems is necessary to support strategic planning.

In this context, the study had the objective of drawing up guidelines on the application of the Life Cycle Assessment methodology to agrivoltaic systems, examining in detail the most critical aspects for multifunctional systems such as, for example, the identification of the main function and the selection of the most suitable approach for managing the multifunctionality that characterizes these systems.

The guidelines were developed in accordance with international reference standards (ISO 14040).
