Assessment of technical and economic elements for HVAC-to-HVDC OHL conversion in Sicilian grid

The present paper reports several network analyses and provides technical and economic elements regarding the potential conversion of a transmission line from HVAC (High Voltage Alternating Current) to HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current). Focus is on the power network of Sicily in a 2030 scenario.

The present paper reports several network analyses and provides technical and economic elements regarding the potential conversion of a transmission line from HVAC (High Voltage Alternating Current) to HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current).

 

Focus is on the power network of Sicily in a 2030 scenario, towards the detection of grid congestions, also as effect of the massive injection of electricity produced by RES (renewable energy sources), particularly concentrated in the western side of Sicily.

 

The 2×220 kV Partanna-Partinico line is the candidate link selected for the potential OHL (overhead line) conversion from HVAC to HVDC. The study, carried out within the cooperation agreement involving RSE and University of Padova, follows up previous works executed in the field.
