“APE – Appunti di Energia” by RSE, the new issue on the energy policy of the European Union in a period of great challenges

All about the packages and regulations that allow us to ensure a secure, sustainable and competitive energy supply.

The series “APE – Energy Notes” continues with a new appointment. This month Silvia Laera and Fabio Lanati, researchers of the Department of Energy Systems Development of RSE, “Scenarios and System Analysis” group, analyze the challenges that the EU has faced in recent years.

The European Union has long recognized the crucial importance of a sustainable, innovative and socially fair energy policy.

Since 2009, with the introduction of the 20-20-20 package, the European Union has demonstrated a strong commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving energy efficiency and increasing the use of renewable energy. This package marked the beginning of a long and ambitious journey that has seen Europe position itself as a world leader in the energy transition.

Over the past five years (2019-2024), global events such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East have repeatedly required the Union’s energy policy to be reviewed and adapted to meet new challenges and ensure the resilience of the European energy system.

This period has been characterized by a series of initiatives and regulations aimed at promoting energy efficiency, increasing the use of renewable energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions:

  • 2019: European Green Deal
  • 2020: European Climate Law
  • 2021: Fit for 55 package
  • 2022: REPowerEU package
  • 2023: Adoption of key regulations
  • 2024: regulations to improve the energy performance of buildings and new PNIEC (National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan)

Want to know more? In this month’s APE we explore in detail the packages and regulations that allow us to ensure a secure, sustainable and competitive energy supply.
