RSE–ANEV: research and industry players supporting the sustainable development of wind power in Italy

The meeting confirmed the importance of a structured collaboration between research organisations and industry stakeholders, so that research can make a tangible contribution to the energy transition, the strengthening of the national electricity system and the enhancement of the Italian renewable energy industrial value chain.

On 29 April 2026, RSE organized a technical exchange meeting at the headquarters of ANEV in Rome, involving the Italian National Wind Energy Association and its member companies. The meeting was dedicated to the presentation of the main results of the Research on the Italian Electrical System (RdS) activities in the wind energy sector and to the collection of feedback from industry stakeholders.

The initiative is part of the broader RdS framework, which aims to promote innovation, sustainability and security of the national electricity system through applied research closely aligned with the needs of the country. In this context, wind energy represents one of the key pillars for the decarbonisation of the Italian energy system and for achieving national and European climate targets.

During the workshop, RSE presented a wide range of research activities that go beyond the development and updating of the Italian Wind Atlas (AEOLIAN), including advanced studies on onshore and offshore wind planning, environmental impact assessments using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodologies, analyses of the effects of climate change on wind energy productivity and energy drought phenomena, as well as the development of techno-economic models for offshore hybrid systems integrating wind, photovoltaics and energy storage. Innovative modelling tools for the ex-ante assessment of environmental impacts associated with accidental events, such as oil leakages from wind turbines, were also presented.

A central element of the meeting was the direct dialogue with ANEV and with operators across the wind energy value chain, aimed at collecting observations, information needs and practical inputs to better orient research activities towards operational and policy-relevant outcomes. This exchange strengthens the role of system research as a technical and scientific support to public policies, energy planning and industrial decision-making, fostering the development of wind energy solutions consistent with the territorial, environmental and infrastructural specificities of the Italian context.
