Laboratory for the detection of wet-snow and ice sleeves on overhead line conductors – WILD

The WILD experimental station, unique in Italy, is dedicated to the study of snowfall with high liquid water content. Located in Vinadio (CN) at about 950 m a.s.l., it reproduces natural conditions for the formation of ice sleeves on overhead power lines, which cause damage to power grids every year.

Designed and built by RSE, the WILD station experimentally verifies the effect of these snowfall events on high- and medium-voltage conductors. Current experiments include collecting meteorological data during snow events, acquiring sleeve accretion data on standard conductors, and verifying the effectiveness of anti-icing systems.

The station also monitors accretion on different types of conductors and tests on super-hydrophobic and ice-phobic conductors in winter wet-snow conditions. The automatic collection of meteorological data, accretion measurements, and photo documentation makes WILD an ideal platform for studying sleeve mitigation solutions.

The data collected support the validation of the sleeve load predictive models of the Climate and Meteorology Research Group of the Sustainable Development and Energy Sources (SFE) Department of RSE, which can be consulted on Wolf .
