ENTSO-E’s RDI Implementation Plan 2026–2030, developed with the support of RSE, has been published

ENTSO-E’s RDI Implementation Plan 2026–2030, developed with the support of RSE, has been published

The drafting of the Implementation Plan, which began in 2025, involved the full participation of Mattia Cabiati, Omar Pasqualotto and Luciano Martini from RSE’s Generation Technologies and Materials Department.

RSE has completed its assignment providing collaboration and support for the drafting of ENTSO-E’s Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Implementation Report 2026-2030 (European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity), the European association of national transmission system operators.

The Implementation Plan translates the Missions and Milestones set out in the ENTSO-E Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Roadmap 2024-2034 (also drafted with RSE’s support) into high-level Project Concepts. The purpose of the document is indeed to translate the strategy defined in the Roadmap into concrete, actionable Project Concepts, acting as a catalyst for transformative change across the European energy sector: it promotes collaboration led by the European transmission system operators (TSOs) and supports the modernisation of the European electricity system.

In detail, the Implementation Plan defines 13 Project Concepts focused on system resilience, system stability, artificial intelligence applications, digital twin, forecasting solutions, flexibility services, HVDC, hydrogen and other areas.

Each Project Concept includes detailed information clearly outlining its rationale, scope of application, expected outcomes and the evolution of its technology readiness level (TRL). The Implementation Plan fosters close collaboration between TSOs and other energy sector stakeholders to support the adoption of innovative solutions in the electricity system. The state of the art of each Project Concept is backed by ongoing or recently completed TSO projects, which demonstrate the technology readiness levels already achieved.

The drafting of the Implementation Plan, which began in 2025, involved the full participation of Mattia Cabiati, Omar Pasqualotto and Luciano Martini from RSE’s Generation Technologies and Materials Department.

RSE’s work initially focused on selecting and analysing the main results of ongoing or recently completed projects that could serve as background for the development of the Project Concepts.

Following this initial phase, RSE developed the 13 Project Concepts in close collaboration with the members of ENTSO-E’s RDIP committee.

The RDI Roadmap 2024-2034 was published by ENTSO-E and is available at this link.
