Hydrogen and nuclear fusion: RSE stops in Naples for a joint workshop with Federico II University

Focus on the concept of the “Energy Trilemma”: environmental sustainability, energy security and affordability.

 

On June 11, 2026, the seminar “Multiphysics and AI Approach for H₂-Based and Nuclear Fusion Power Plant” was held at the San Giovanni a Teduccio Technology Campus of the University of Naples Federico II. The event was jointly organized by the University of Naples Federico II and Ricerca sul Sistema Energetico (RSE).

 

The initiative provided an important opportunity for discussion between the research community and academia on the key topics driving the transformation of the energy sector: hydrogen, nuclear fusion, advanced numerical simulation, and artificial intelligence.

 

 

During the seminar, the main challenges facing today’s energy systems were presented through the concept of the Energy Trilemma: environmental sustainability, energy security, and energy affordability. Particular emphasis was placed on the strategic role that innovative technologies such as hydrogen and nuclear fusion may play in addressing these challenges.

 

A significant portion of the event was dedicated to RSE’s research activities in the hydrogen field, with a focus on PEM electrolyzers, multiphysics models developed for the simulation of electrochemical processes, and the implementation of Digital Twins for the monitoring and optimization of energy systems. Concrete examples were also presented on the application of artificial intelligence and neural networks to accelerate data analysis, support engineering design activities, and improve the performance of complex energy systems

 

 

Then the focus shifted to inertial confinement nuclear fusion, one of the most promising technologies for sustainable energy production in the long term. RSE’s ongoing research activities in the field of multiphysics numerical modeling of fusion reactors were presented, together with an overview of the national and international collaborations currently underway.

 

The event attracted strong interest from students, PhD candidates, and researchers, highlighting the importance of strengthening the connection between universities and applied research in order to develop the skills and expertise needed to tackle the energy challenges of the future.
