The article ‘Citizen-led decentralized energy futures: Emerging rationales of energy system organization,’ published in the journal Energy Research & Social Science, is now available online. Simone Maggiore of RSE Energy Systems Development Department is a contributor to the article. The analysis was developed within the IEA, in which Simone participates as an Italian representative in some Technology Collaboration Programs.

This article explores the rationale behind the current trends toward a more decentralized electricity system, analyzing the various emerging initiatives in the energy system under the pressure of citizens and their values. In particular, possible paths of change, institutional players, and the technological preconditions these paths require to become predominant forms of decentralization are examined.
