Online publication of the new RSE monograph on hydroelectricity

After the presentation at Aquawatt, the new RSE study is available for download.

On October 30, RSE presented the RSEView monograph ‘The role of hydroelectricity in the energy transition process’ at Piacenza Expo, during the Aquawatt Forum.

The study provides a complete and comprehensive overview of the hydroelectric sector, especially in Italy. The monograph highlights the studies promoted by RSE in system research and the products developed in recent years to preserve the heritage of existing infrastructures and to enhance their strengths, in particular the ability to provide balancing services to the electricity grid, to contribute to adaptation to climate change and to mitigate the impacts of extreme events, such as floods and water scarcity.

It also analyzes the technical, social, environmental and economic barriers that could hinder the use of these plants in the energy transition process, in the protection of the local area and in the integrated management of water resources.

The monograph concludes with two appendices for learning and knowledge. The first contains a glossary that briefly describes the main components of a hydroelectric plant. The second provides a brief description of the causes of the three disasters that influenced public opinion and energy development strategies in Italy: the disasters of Gleno in 1923, Molare in 1935 and Vajont in 1963. These dramatic events allowed us to draw useful lessons that led to changes in regulations in order to prevent other tragedies from occurring.
