Contribution to NO₂ concentrations from the main anthropogenic sectors in 31 Italian cities

Urban air pollution is a priority issue for assessing human exposure. Since different urban environments exhibit heterogeneous emission profiles, the dataset quantifies the contribution of various source sectors to NO₂ concentrations.

DESCRIPTION

The data contained in this dataset include the model-based estimates of the urban background annual mean concentration of nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) for the year 2017, along with the contribution of the different emission sectors, both in absolute and relative terms, for 31 Italian cities, including all regional capitals. The emission sectors are grouped into five main categories:
• Light-duty transport: exhaust emissions from cars, motorcycles, and light commercial vehicles;
• Heavy-duty transport: exhaust emissions from heavy commercial vehicles;
• Residential: domestic heating using natural gas and biomass combustion;
• Industrial and power generation: emissions from industrial activities and electricity production;
• Other: waste incineration, natural emissions, agriculture, shipping, and agricultural machinery.
The concentrations are obtained using the CAMx air‑quality model.

APPLICATIONS

The processed data presented in this report are displayed in RSE’s Energy and Territory Geoportal through an interactive map that, for each city, shows the concentration value, the relative contribution of the different emission sectors, and the sector that contributes most to NO₂ concentrations. The data are available in CSV format and can be consulted to identify the main emission source in the various Italian urban contexts analyzed.

USERS

The dataset is available to researchers, universities, regional environmental protection agencies, and associations interested in urban air‑quality issues.
