Defining the operability range of “EAVOR closed-loop” geothermal technology

Evaluation of the potential and Italy-wide applicability of the innovative closed-loop geothermal technology, DEEP EAVOR, capable of making geothermal energy production more efficient.


 
DESCRIPTION
The research focused on defining the operating ranges of the high-efficiency geothermal technology “Eavor Loop,” i.e., a giant underground heat exchanger that, depending on the thermal conditions of the site, is heated and used for both thermal and electrical production, by identifying the distribution of sites on the national territory corresponding to the operating ranges and by carrying out in-depth geological analyses for two regions (Sardinia and Campania). It was considered of interest to model the applicability and producibility of the latest technological version, since the new configuration has been optimized to reach deeper targets, with the possibility of operating not only in terrigenous and carbonate geological formations, but also in metamorphic ones, with depths up to 7 km.
 
APPLICATIONS
The main application of the “EAVOR 2.0 closed-loop” geothermal technology operating range definition studies is to enable ex-ante exploitability studies and the evaluation of the thermal and electrical producibility of geothermal spatial systems characterized by high efficiency.
 
USERS
The main users of studies related to heat exchangers in existing wells are policy makers, but mostly energy operators and local governments.
