Distribution of boreholes suitable for installation of geothermal borehole heat exchangers

The requirements for the definition of the boreholes suitable for the installation of the exchangers were identified and, as for the boreholes with a public profile of 1:1000, the distribution over the Italian territory was defined.


 
DESCRIPTION
The study examined the possibility of reusing boreholes drilled for hydrocarbon production in the country, with a detailed data collection of historical boreholes. The location of these boreholes was then analyzed as a function of subsurface temperature. In this way, several areas in Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, Marche, Abruzzo, Molise, Basilicata and Sicily were identified. Among these, the potential of the Mazzara-Lippone field was verified in a case study. The area identified appears to have good potential, but requires in-depth geological, site scale geothermal and technological investigations to verify the actual applicability of the technology being investigated.
 
APPLICATIONS
The main application of the studies for the definition of the conditions of suitability of the borehole heat exchangers is mainly to allow ex ante studies of exploitability and evaluation of the thermal and electrical producibility of geothermal space systems characterized by high efficiency.
 
USERS
The main users of studies related to heat exchangers in existing boreholes are policy makers, but especially energy operators and local governments.
