projects - Power System Research - Three year plan (2015-2017/2018)

Industrial processes and machinery

The research activity focuses on important national strategic goals: promoting energy efficiency, contributing to the decarbonisation process of the industrial sector, and ensuring that Italian industry has a proper technologies to support its competitiveness in the international arena.

In order to achieve these goals, the project is structured along several lines of action, which are complementary to each other.

Strategic studies aimed at identifying efficiency scenarios in line with European guidelines

RSE carries out strategic studies on the entire industrial sector, which include the development of an observatory on efficiency-enhancing technologies adopted by national companies for reducing times and identifying and classifying, according to technological and economic sustainability principles, the main energy efficiency interventions that can be applied by Italian industry; for reasons of time and complexity of the subject, these interventions have not been analysed so far. The activity is also aimed at collecting and analysing the overall energy-saving potential of energy efficiency interventions that can be implemented in the domestic industrial sector, and the related costs. The study is preparatory to assessing the energy consumption reduction potential that the industrial sector may achieve, in the light of the energy efficiency targets set by European and national legislation. This activity, moreover, is aimed at providing support to AEEGSI, the Italian Regulatory Authority for Electricity, Gas and the Water System, for the collection of information for determining the preventive value of the unit tariff contribution to be recognised to obligated parties under the White Certificates mechanism. Specifically, research carries out: atechnological and energy assessmentin Italian industry (summary and comparison of sectoral analyses carried out for different sectors), analysis of the economic viability of EE interventions and incentive systems (analysis of case studies), impact analysis of EE interventions on the competitiveness of enterprises, analysis and comparison of control mechanisms on energy efficiency in industries in the European context

Research on energy efficiency through specific technologies in particularly strategic or energy-intensive sectors.

The studies propose the experimental verification of selected technological solutions which are analysed in close collaboration with relevant industrial realities and are selected based on prior analyses that clearly demonstrate their convenience and application potential and future market penetration, with a particular focus on the energy efficiency of production processes and widely used or energy-intensive products or services. In particular, research were deepened on efficient technologies for technical gas production.
