Transmission and distribution Hybrid nEtworks with enhanced resilience and robUstnesS

THEUS project aims to develop advanced methodologies and tools to support the implementation of hybrid AC/DC networks considering all voltage levels.

To this end, a set of six planning solutions and six operation solutions will be developed, which will be validated in five use cases addressing the most representative challenges faced by European networks. These use cases will be based on models of five real grids representing different planning stages and different voltage levels. In more detail, the models will represent:
 a planned transnational HVAC/HVDC transmission interconnector, linking Crete, Cyprus and Israel;
 an existing hybrid distribution network in Italy;
 a planned MVDC distribution network in Turkey;
 an existing HVAC/HVDC link between Attica and Crete;
 an existing MVAC/MVDC/LVDC microgrid in Spain.
The validation will instead be conducted on six test benches, including the RSE Real Time simulation laboratory, which will allow to reach TRL 5 by the end of the project.
RSE participates in several project activities and leads the tasks dedicated to developing methodologies and tools for the evaluation of:
 transnational AC/DC hybrid transmission system planning, reliability and resilience and
 the impacts of MVDC links and their integration into existing AC distribution grids.
The THEUS consortium is made up of 15 partners from 8 EU countries, including research organisations, manufacturers, electricity system operators, a wind farm operator, a European association. This ensures synergy and exploitation of the solutions that will be developed in the project.
