A participatory Web GIS for stakeholder engagement in the development of the electricity grid

The article describes the prototype of a participatory Web GIS aimed at improving public participation, allowing them to interact with decision makers and proponents, and express their opinion on alternative solutions in the development of electricity infrastructures.

The research presented in this document is aimed at investigating and analyzing Web GIS features that could support people’s engagement in the decision-making process, improve their participation and allow them to express their opinion on alternatives to better evaluate the effects .

The tool was developed to support decisions related to the development of the electricity grid, but can also be used for the installation of renewable energy systems. Due to its specific characteristics and the geographical nature of the data considered, the most appropriate phase for using Web GIS is regional planning. Web GIS are already currently used to present certain information on grid infrastructures. In this project, we investigated how the core features of Web GIS can be improved or expanded to support public participation, possibly enhancing the public’s role in decision-making.

A participatory Web GIS prototype was developed and implemented, focusing on features that could improve public participation, allow them to interact with decision makers and proponents, and express their opinion on possible alternative paths or solutions.
