Applications of MVDC Technologies for the Evolution of the MVAC Distribution Network

This paper presents a methodology for the study of the integration of DC links into existing AC distribution grids. The approach goes beyond literature, where the analysis is related to a single technical aspect. The methodology for the analysis is introduced, with also a simple case study.

This paper presents preliminary work in the definition of a methodology for the identification of specific operating conditions and grid configurations that could justify the introduction of DC links into existing AC distribution grids. Both the DC conversion of portions of MVAC networks and the integration of new infrastructures in DC are of interest.

The article presents an approach to the problem of MVDC infrastructure development by going beyond what is found in the literature, where the choice between MVDC and MVAC is mainly related to a single technical aspect, such as the calculation of network power losses, voltage drops or installation and operating costs. A methodology for the analysis and identification of existing MV distribution grids is introduced, with an example application to a selected synthetic case study.
