Converting Overhead Lines from HVAC to HVDC: an Overview Analysis

In this article, we present an overview of the main factors to consider in the line conversion from HVAC to HVDC, describing the technical, economic and environmental aspects to achieve the maximum benefits from the conversion. We also report some investigations on projects and studies underway around the world.

Several contributions in the technical literature highlight the potential offered by the conversion of an existing HVAC (High Voltage Alternating Current) overhead line to an HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) line. In the context of the global energy transition from fossil-based electricity generation to that based on an ever-increasing penetration of renewables, overhead line conversion from HVAC to HVDC is an option worth considering. In fact, without occupying further portions of land, we can significantly increase the power transmitted by the existing corridors.
