Domestic Heat-Pump Water Heater Aggregates: a Contribution to Demand Flexibility

The paper proposes a method to quantify the flexibility of aggregated domestic electric heat pump water heaters for the provision of system services.

Flexibility is defined as the ability of an aggregate to modify its power demand over a specified time period. The method uses a dynamic model of water heaters as well as a stochastic model for ambient and cold water temperatures and hot water demand, combined in a Monte Carlo analysis. Aggregates defined in Italy are analyzed as a case study.
