Economic analysis of a Power-to-Gas pilot plant within the Italian energy transition framework

This work aims to evaluate the economic sustainability of a pilot power-to-gas plant, with reference to the Italian context in the medium to long term, based on the energy scenarios of the Italian National Integrated Plan for Climate and Energy (PNIEC).

The objective of this study is to evaluate the economic sustainability of a pilot power-to-gas plant, with reference to the Italian context in the medium to long term. The study is based on the energy scenarios of the Italian National Integrated Plan for Climate and Energy (PNIEC) and assumes that the plant participates in ancillary services markets. It assesses the economic barriers and main factors influencing the competitiveness of power-to-gas. The results show that although power-to-gas is a technically feasible solution to support the flexibility of the power system, the economics of the pilot plant are strongly influenced by component and operational costs. The findings also highlight the need for appropriate policies and financial support to improve operational conditions for pilot applications of this technology.
