Electric Cars vs Diesel and Gasoline: A Comparative LCA Ranging from Micro-Car to Family Car

The article compares the environmental performance of electric vehicles with similar diesel and gasoline models in terms of Life Cycle Assessment, considering a wide range of vehicles and analyzing the distribution of impacts by both life cycle stage and geographic location.

Rather than analyzing a single vehicle type, a wide range of vehicles is considered—from the small city car to the family car—highlighting how the advantages and disadvantages of the electric vehicle do not depend on the category to which the vehicle belongs. The analysis shows that electric vehicles perform better than conventional vehicles in terms of greenhouse effect, consumption of nonrenewable resources, and emissions of pollutants of concern in urban areas. On the other hand, electric vehicles do not appear to be competitive for impact categories such as water eutrophication and human toxicity, for which impacts due to the battery life cycle play a decisive role.
