Electrical Characteristics of HTS Coils With and Without Insulation in a Layer-Wound Configuration

This article compares the electrical characteristics of two coils wound with the same BSCCO tape, with or without dielectric insulation between the turns. A parameter-equivalent electrical circuit was developed to interpret the measurements and analyze the current distribution in the windings.

The article analyzes the current distribution in Non-Isolated (NI) coils in multi-layer configuration. The analysis is aimed at comparing the electrical characteristics of two coils wound with the same BSCCO tape, with or without dielectric insulation between the turns. Both coils feature a very similar geometry, with the same number of turns and layers. Both coils, cooled in a liquid nitrogen bath, are charged until the critical current is exceeded. To interpret the measurements and analyze the current distribution in the windings, an equivalent lumped-parameter electrical circuit was developed and solved numerically in a time-varying regime. The model results are compared to the signals acquired through voltage taps soldered to the same locations in both windings. Finally, the model is used to study the impact of transverse contact resistance and to estimate the most stressed segments of the coil during charging, in terms of power produced by the Joule effect.
