Flexibility of electric water heaters and heat pumps

The paper presents a method to assess the flexibility of domestic water heaters aggregates in the context of “demand response”. The method utilizes a thermal load model and external variables to define the overall availability of modulable electrical power.

The flexibility of a load aggregate is defined as its ability to vary its power consumption from the baseline profile starting at a certain time and maintain this variation for a given duration. The method is applied to 15 potential aggregation areas in Italy, considering three representative classes of resistive water heaters and one class of heat pump water heaters.
