Insulator Diagnostics Through a Dielectric E-Field Sensor

This work presents the application of an electric field sensor in the diagnostics of line insulators.

Overhead line insulator diagnostics have proven to be an important element in detecting and preventing the outage of these types of components. Among the various techniques used, electric field sensors have been used extensively to verify the presence of internal or surface defects. These sensors are mostly based on capacitive probes which introduce a significant local distortion of the electric field itself and, furthermore, can represent a danger for those carrying out the measurement. In this work we will introduce a new class of electric field sensors that are completely dielectric. The sensor is able to measure both the magnitude and the direction of the electric field in a plane showing a strong rejection of components perpendicular to that plane. Furthermore, the sensor is sensitive over a wide frequency spectrum.
