Introducing Outcomes from 1ICOLD 15th International Benchmark Workshop on Numerical Analysis of Dams. Seismic Analysis of Pine Flat Concrete Dam

The technical committee of the ICOLD Computational Aspects of Analysis and Design of Dams organized the 15th International Benchmark Workshop on numerical analysis of dams. Theme A of the Benchmark involved the seismic analysis of the Pine Flat Dam. In this article, the formulators of the Benchmark theme present the analyzed cases, a selection of the analysis results, the general conclusions and highlight the need to develop shared best practices for advanced analyses of concrete dams.

Approximately two dozen solutions were presented to the six case studies proposed in the theme, which included the reproduction of forced vibration tests conducted on the dam in the winter and summer of 1971, the evaluation of model uncertainties arising from the application of different types of boundary conditions to simulate correctly the propagation of seismic waves in the analysis of cases with the dam alone or with the dam-foundation system subjected to impulsive loads, the evaluation of the influence of the reservoir level on the response of the dam to seismic loads, the evaluation of the non-linear behavior of the dam on the seismic response of the dam-basin-foundation system and the evaluation of the seismic response with the massless approach. In this article, the formulators of the Benchmark theme present the analyzed cases, a selection of the analysis results, the general conclusions and highlight the need to develop shared best practices for advanced analyses of concrete dams.
