Life Cycle Assessment di un impianto fotovoltaico con moduli
Interdigitated Back Contact (IBC)

The present study aims to analyze the environmental impacts generated by a utility-scale ground-mounted photovoltaic plant equipped with Interdigitated Back Contact (IBC) modules, in order to identify any existing hotspots and promote the development of increasingly sustainable technology.

The photovoltaic sector has been experiencing a strong expansion for years, and currently, there are numerous technologies available on the market. For the Italian energy sector, which aims to be environmentally sustainable as well as economically viable in the context of ecological transition, it is crucial to evaluate the environmental profile of different photovoltaic technologies. This study presents the environmental impacts, analyzed using the Life Cycle Assessment methodology, generated by a utility-scale ground-mounted photovoltaic plant equipped with IBC modules installed in two hypothetical sites located in Piacenza and Catania. The study reveals that the wafer production processes, due to high energy consumption, generate significant impacts. Additionally, it highlights a substantial contribution of certain chemicals such as NH3 and N2O used in the cell manufacturing process.
