Life Cycle Assessment of stationary lithium ion batteries in Italy

This study modeled the entire life cycle of lithium ion batteries (Lithium-Iron-Phosphate LFP, Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt NMC 532 and NMC 622), considering primary and literature data, and analyzing environmental impacts.

The introduction of stationary storage systems within the Italian electricity grid is useful to the progressive decarbonization of the energy system through non-programmable renewable sources. To verify its actual sustainability, Life Cycle Assessment is a suitable tool for evaluating environmental impacts. This study modeled the entire life cycle of lithium ion batteries (Lithium-Iron-Phosphate LFP, Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt NMC 532 and NMC 622), considering primary and literature data, and analyzing environmental impacts. The results of the study showed that energy consumption (mainly during cell production), battery design (especially binder choice), inventory accuracy and data quality are key aspects that can strongly influence results.
