Measuring the circularity of power systems

The study proposes a metric for measuring and monitoring the level of circularity in the Italian electricity generation sector through the evaluation of a wide range of indicators that include assessments of environmental sustainability from a life cycle perspective.

The circular economy will play a priority role in the energy transition journey undertaken by the European Union. Measuring the circularity and environmental sustainability of actions taken is essential for achieving the set objectives. In this context, the study contributes to the literature by proposing a metric to measure the level of circularity of the Italian power system that integrates environmental sustainability indicators evaluated through the Life Cycle Assessment methodology. The tool has enabled the measurement of the circularity level of electricity generation in Italy and highlighted priority areas for operation. The results obtained can provide scientific support in planning concrete actions in the circular transition journey by evaluating a wide range of indicators covering the entire value chain of electricity generation.
