The article presents a new bottom-up approach to analyze heat and electricity consumption in the Italian residential sector.

First, the paper describes structure of the approach adopted and the model for accounting for the energy balance of the various technologies. This model was applied to the micro-data provided by the Italian Statistical Institute, which provides a statistical representation of the typical uses of Italian households. The results of the model thus obtained through a (bottom-up) approach were then validated through comparison with the available national aggregate data (top-down), on both electricity and heat and with the information available on the expenditure of Italian households.

Finally, the model was used to describe and represent the progressive path of electrification of household services, currently still mainly ensured by the use of fossil fuels.
