Optical voltage transducer for embedded Medium Voltage equipment: design and parameter optimization

This work presents the optimization of the optical layout through a numerical and experimental investigation to ensure the survivability of the OVS under fast overvoltages.

A prototype of an optical voltage sensor (OVS) has been developed for monitoring Medium Voltage in distribution networks, suitable for operating as an embedded sensor in a capacitive divider.

The developed sensor is based on a retracing scheme, which consists of two lithium tantalate crystals used as voltage transducers and standard single-mode fiber optic components for telecommunications. This work reports the results of the investigation conducted numerically and experimentally to optimize the optical configuration with the aim of guaranteeing the survival of the sensor itself even in the presence of fast overvoltages. From the tests carried out on the capacitive divider in which the optical sensor was integrated and in the presence of different configurations of the electrical circuit, no electric field gradients were identified within the sensor itself that could have damaged or deteriorated its performance over time.
