Optimal Design of Energy Communities in the Italian Regulatory Framework

Renewable energy communities are gaining significant interest in Italy, in anticipation of the upcoming final implementation of the RED II and IEM EU directives into national legislation.

The crux of renewable energy communities is the ability to share the energy produced by the members of the scheme. This aspect will impact the cash flows of the entire energy project, thereby influencing the optimal design of renewable energy generation systems. In light of this, the contribution presents a method for optimally designing a collective energy project and showcases the results of its application to a real-world pilot project in a small village in northern Italy. Several case studies were considered, and the results account for the physical configuration of the community.
